Filling every inch of a long red banner, are the names of 106 cherished friends—this unique loving gesture unfolded 5,175 meters atop Mount Sawu.
“One should never shy away from their dreams. I’ll take my buddies to the top!” said Ruan Xiang, a sophomore majoring in physical education at Hubei Preschool Teachers College, on May 28.

Reaching Breaking Point 150 m from the Summit
Mount Sawu, located in southwest China’s Xiaojin County, Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture in Sichuan Province, stands at 5,175 meters. For seasoned climbers, it is merely an entry-level hike. However, for Ruan Xiang, a novice climber attempting his first-ever ascent on a snowcapped mountain, each step tested his limits.
Ruan, who allocated three days to his Mount Sawu expedition, arrived at the base a day earlier to acclimatize. At 3 a.m. on May 19, Ruan hoisted 10 kg of equipment, then geared up with a headlamp and a trekking pole before setting out with the guide into calf-deep snow.
“We had to traverse four ‘desperate slopes’ and return to the camp before the snow melts at 9 a.m.,” Ruan Xiang told reporters. The notorious ‘desperate slopes’ are the most treacherous sections of the route, as steep areas with gradients of about 65 to 78 degrees make it extremely difficult to find a foothold. Many climbers had given up or been evacuated midway after succumbing to altitude sickness and exhaustion. Ruan, who was equally nearly drained of strength, had a gruesome climb ahead. “In the final 150 meters, my body and mind were screaming in agony, as I teetered between retreating and going forward.”
Just when Ruan Xiang hit his breaking point, the guide asked, “How will you face yourself after descending the mountain?” Determined not to “take home regrets”, he clenched his jaw, got up and trudged on. Finally, three hours later, Ruan stood at the summit soaking in the morning light.

Upon reaching the peak, it was now time for Ruan’s final “grand gesture”. He pulled out of his backpack a banner filled with names and took a photo as a souvenir. Sprawling across the banner were 106 names, each belonging to a classmate or friend he’s known since childhood.
“My friends once mentioned wanting to visit western Sichuan to see the snowy mountains, but life kept getting in the way. I’m the type to see things through whenever I set my heart on something. So I came, and I brought everyone ‘along’ to the mountaintop. I hope this snow-capped peak can bear witness to our friendship,” Ruan said with a smile.
“I only realized I’d also ‘made it the top’ of the snowy mountain when I saw Ruan’s post. It was such a surprise, and I couldn’t be prouder of him,” said Wang Tiantong, a preschool education major at Hubei Preschool Teachers College. As Ruan’s close friend and fellow student council member, Wang described him as easy-going, well-liked and competent, someone who will go to lengths for his friends.
Others quickly jumped on the excitement, posting “hiking photos,” captioned: “Big shoutout to my buddy Xiang for bringing me to this spot!” “So epic! Sawu Snow Mountain, been there! Big thanks to Boss Ruan!” “Boss Ruan got me to the 5,175-meter-high skies! Life’s a boundless field—gotta be a master navigator of it...”
Reaching the summit was not the finish line, but rather a starting point for self-rediscovery. After returning from Sawu Snow Mountain, Ruan Xiang gained new insights on life: “Only by pushing beyond my physical limits, did I unleash tremendous strength and realize my untapped potential. As an aspiring teacher in physical education, I’ll share my story of conquering my own fears on the snowy peak with my students—teaching them to bravely face challenges and the unknown, and to cultivate the perseverance to rise above themselves.”
