On the ground floor of the Party Member and Mass Center in Huacheng Community, Jinyinhu Street, East-west Lake District, Wuhan, there is an exhibition hall featuring miniature replicas of iconic buildings such as the Eiffel Tower, the Oriental Pearl Tower, and the Yellow Crane Tower. These structures are all crafted from chopsticks or solid wood, and each miniature building is intricately detailed, resulting in a captivating mini architectural park. All of this is the handiwork of 83-year-old Huang Daode.

At the age of 60, Huang began assisting his granddaughter with craft projects in kindergarten, which sparked his passion for woodworking. He has since experimented with materials like wood and chopsticks to recreate various architectural designs. Each time he completes a miniature building, he feels a surge of excitement, thrill, and pride. In fact, Huang has no prior experience in carpentry or the construction industry. All he did was replicate the landmarks he had seen or heard of based on his perception, understanding and imagination. He still remembers that the first work he completed was a miniature Yellow Crane Tower. Without any experience and guidance, Huang encountered many setbacks when it came to purchasing materials, assembling the components, and making basic architectural structures. Unsurprisingly, it took him a year to finish his first work. Now, recalling that arduous learning curve and the hurdles he overcame, he is filled with a sense of achievement.

He said with smile: “I was not irritated. On the contrary, I felt very satisfied because I had discovered what I was interested in. I was thrilled when I eventually succeeded, because I kept going and was determined to see my ideas through.”Having successfully laid the groundwork with one complete piece and now equipped with valuable experience, Huang drafted a set of standard rules, purchased new tools, and embarked on the path of replicating landmark buildings. Some buildings were based on blueprints and his own imagination, while others required field research to recall every detail. The fastest piece took just three months to complete. During the process of recreating these buildings, Huang found that the most challenging part was purchasing building materials. He had to search for materials that closely matched the original appearance of the landmark buildings, to ensure his works closely resembled their protypes.

At the age of 60, he discovered his passion and began a new career as a “master architect”. Huang Daode's experience is a perfect example of the saying “60 is the right age to venture”, and that even at the age of 80, one can still make great strides professionally.
