He is a teacher who still remembers his students from 20 years ago and now teaches those students' children. He teaches Morality and the Rule of Law (a political science course taught in China's junior high schools, hereinafter referred to as “Daofa”). During his online classes, even his students' parents fell in love with his lessons. He is also a volunteer who maintains order in the school. When he finds students not abiding by the school regulations, he often steps forward to intervene and implement what he teaches in his classes. He is a 30-year teaching veteran, Mr. Wu Bin, from Lujiajie junior high school in Wuhan. His elaborate and detailed teaching plans are considered model teaching plans. His seventh-grade students are top among their peers from other schools in Wuchang district.

On the morning of March 15, Mr. Wu suddenly fell ill while preparing lessons in his office and unfortunately passed away at the age of 55.

Impressing His Colleagues With “Model Teaching Plans”

“Although in most people's eyes, Daofa is a minor subject, Mr. Wu believed otherwise. His notes in his textbooks and teaching plans are very elaborate, and almost every new teacher wanted to learn from him,” said Li Bumin, the general secretary of the party branch of Lujiajie junior high school.

Opening Mr. Wu's textbook, you will find every page filled with various key teaching points and related material marked in red, without any margins left. For instance, he would prepare questions to ask in class or some cases of current affairs, and even leave notes to remind himself to have interactions with students.

It is understood that Mr. Wu was responsible for the Daofa courses of 6 seventh grade classes which served more than 300 students. He carefully marked each student's assignments and even made use of his lunch break to check whether the students had memorized the key points.

“The first time I saw Mr. Wu's textbook, I couldn't believe it. The notes were so detailed and elaborate,” says Yuan Man, the school's teacher, and apprentice of Mr. Wu, who was amazed by Mr. Wu's textbook on his first arrival at the school. “What impressed me more was that during the online classes last year, he would come to the school and give online tutoring in the actual classroom. He said that students would be more attentive if he did so.”

Hu Yanhong, the vice principal of the school, showed a video of Mr. Wu's online class to the Jimu news reporter. This lesson, “The Ordinary and Great of Life”, had the central idea of how ordinary people can lead a great life. Mr. Wu designed his lessons carefully, made very well-designed PowerPoint slides with many pictures and video clips of news figures, and explained abstract theories in simple words. Feedback from the students' homework showed that this class won the heart of his students.

With his good preparation before the class and vivid case studies in the class, Mr. Wu's lessons were also favored by parents. “Every class, Mr. Wu would provide a large number of case studies of current affairs and relate them to the material in the textbooks, so his class never followed a rigid script. During the online classes last year, we parents would sometimes listen to his class along with our kids,” said the parent of a student, Wu Wendi.

A Student From 20 Years Ago Is Still Grateful To Mr. Wu

A student named Li Xinyi, whose father, Li Jie, was also taught by Mr. Wu in junior high school in 1996 and enrolled in Mr. Wu's class.

“The first time I dropped my child off at school, I saw Mr. Wu's name and wondered if it might be my former teacher.” Li Jie told the reporter that after he picked up his child, he saw Mr. Wu leaving the school, dressed in very plain clothes as he always had. He then walked over, together with his child, and asked Mr. Wu if he still remembered him. “To my surprise, Mr. Wu instantly remembered who I was. In my school years, I struggled to memorize the material, so at noon I often went to Mr. Wu's home to continue with my schoolwork. I told Mr. Wu that Li Xinyi is my child, whom I was now happily leaving in his care.”

Li Jie recalled that when he was a student, Mr. Wu would ask those students, who could not memorize the material, to go to his home at noon every day to study; and they could only leave when they had familiarized themselves with the material. Although Mr. Wu was very strict in class, he treated his students as if they were his own children. At noon, if his students were hungry, he would cook them fried rice. “I still remember Mr. Wu once said that a smile is a virtue, an encouragement, and a hope. When I learned that Mr. Wu was my child's teacher, I felt very relieved. I often tell my child that Mr. Wu had taught me before and that he is a very conscientious and responsible teacher. Now my child was paying careful attention in Mr. Wu's class and getting full marks in Daofa every time.”

Li Xinyi also said, “I thought the class would be boring, but when I listened to Mr. Wu's class, I found it very interesting. He always discussed social news and current affairs in class. Usually, we still wanted more of his class after his class was over.”

On the morning of March 15 this year, Mr. Wu was preparing for his classes in his office when he suddenly collapsed. Unfortunately, the emergency rescue failed, and his life came to an end at the age of 55. Hearing of the news of Mr. Wu's death, Li Jie rushed to the school as soon as possible.

He said, “I was at work when I heard the news. I immediately asked for a leave and hurried to the school. I couldn't believe that such a good teacher had left the world so abruptly.”

Integrating Theory Into Students' Daily Lives

“The essence of the Daofa course lies in the practice of what is advocated, so Mr. Wu made himself an example for his students to imitate.” Li Bumin, the general secretary of the school's party branch said, “Mr. Wu did not just do this for a while, but stuck to it all his life. He was always a role model for all the teachers in our school.”

“Mr. Wu, you are here so early again.” Every weekday morning, Mr. Wu would ride his electric bike to school and arrive on time at 7:20 a.m. The younger teachers, who also doubled as class teachers, were always in awe at how Mr. Wu, though close to retirement and not a class teacher himself, would just like them consistently arrive early and stay late, rain or shine.

Every day at noon, when students queued to get their meals, Mr. Wu would volunteer to help dish out the food and maintain order. When the queue was neat and tidy, he would give them a smile; however, if someone tried to jump the queue, he would sternly correct them and ask them to stand in line again. With him around, none of the students would dare to push ahead in line. One day, since Mr. Wu arrived late because of a meeting, students followed Mr. Wu's example and took charge of keeping order. Mr. Wu never wasted food and taught his students, with his actions, to appreciate and treasure every grain of rice in their bowls. Moreover, he insisted on reusing and conserving paper. For example, he always printed on both sides of each sheet of paper.

After the death of Mr. Wu, students paid tribute to him with letters. “This is the remark that you made in my assignment. Thank you for correcting my errors, and your handwriting is so beautiful.” In the letter to Mr. Wu, a student named Liang Yang carefully cut out the remark of Mr. Wu from his homework and attached it to the letter, beside his own words of tribute. “I remember you taught us that life is fragile but also resilient. I have seen the strength and greatness of life in you. I will work hard in the Daofa and I will not let you down.” Li Yilin, a student, wrote.

“I remember once when my classmate asked me if he could cut in line, you heard and said ‘You'd better stand in line’. His clear and firm words stuck in my mind.” Chen Zhihan, a student from Class 5, Grade 7, told the reporter, “When a student misbehaved, Mr. Wu would immediately intervene. He always said that Daofa was not only abstract theories studied in the classroom but also practiced in real-life. He would also say “Do not commit evil, no matter how trivial.”

The class teacher Yu Zixuan said, “After Mr. Wu's death, I told the news to his students during a self-study session at night. Although the students may have already heard about it, they all couldn't help crying at that moment.”
