The “Lone Tree” Looks Healthier after Being Trimmed
A lush street flanked by towering oriental sycamore trees, that is the hallmark of the third phase of Wuhan East Lake Greenway, also called Shuxiang Road. From the camphor trees and Chinese wingnuts bordering the lake to the metasequoia trees lining the roadside, each tree is an integral part of the park’s biodiversity.

The Shuxiang Road, following its completion and public opening, has drawn tens of millions of tourists. Yet, is Shuxiang Road green enough, or does it need a little “touch up”? The Wuhan Municipal Garden Greening Construction Management Station and the Big Tree Protection Unit have been keeping a close eye on the trees along Shuxiang Road. In an interview on October 29, a Jimu News reporter uncovered the stories behind these iconic trees of the East Lake Greenway.
A Brief Glance Revives Dying Camphor Tree
The gentle autumn breeze blows ripples over the lake.
Standing on the waterfront platform near the “Lone Tree” on the East Lake Greenway and peering over the railing, one sees a Chinese wingnut and camphor tree on the lakeshore not far off. The graceful branches of the camphor tree naturally droop over the lake, as if whispering something to it.
This immaculate scene in nature now exists thanks to the staff of the Wuhan Municipal Garden and Greening Construction Management Station who took an extra glance at the trees.
It was midsummer, and Du Yanhua, head of the Quality Supervision Section of the station, along with his colleagues came to inspect the construction of the East Lake Greenway booster station, when they discovered the pit of a large camphor tree packed with dirt. Looking up, they noticed that the camphor tree, which should have been lush and healthy, was growing sluggishly, the majority of its branches and leaves withering away.
“Oh no!” Song Qixing, deputy chief of the station’s quality supervision department, measured the soil in the tree pit with a ruler, which was now 30 centimeters deep.
The construction team explained that the pile of construction dirt had been recently placed there temporarily and would soon be removed.
Song Qixing explained to the construction team that the soil within the camphor tree pit cannot be piled so deep as this would severely impact aeration within the roots, and inevitably impede the tree’s growth. Moreover, if the tree were to receive a thorough watering or abundant rains, water would easily flood the tree pit leading to root rot and even more detrimental effects. “Constructors must carefully weigh every action; you cannot casually pile up construction waste”, Song Qixing stated.
Du Yanhua immediately contacted the tree protection unit of the third phase of the East Lake Greenway, Wuhan Garden Ecology Group Chuangran Company, and together with Zhou Ying, the director of the company’s science and technology maintenance department, conducted an on-site “diagnosis” and gave the “prescription” mandating they clear the pile of dirt in the tree pit and prune the branches and leaves to let air and light through. Yet, caution was necessary in pruning the branches extending over the lake, to ensure shade would still be available.
Within a day or two, the soil in the tree pit was cleared and restored to its original state. Arborists trimmed the tree, repaired some of the exposed bark and mulched the tree with pine bark for aesthetic and aeration purposes.
“The dead branches and leaves were enough to fill up a small car.” Zhou Ying stated this camphor tree is estimated to be over 40 years old. During the recent trimming, dead branches that had not been cleared following the freezing rain earlier this year, were also pruned.
Upon returning to the location a week later, Du Yanhua and her colleagues were treated to a renewed and vibrant camphor tree, its branches gracefully stretched over the lake, seemingly full of life.
“If you look at it now, this camphor tree looks like a girl putting on her makeup in front of the lake’s mirror-like surface. The Chinese wingnut next to it also looks healthy.” said Du Yanhua.
Several trees on the gentle slope along the lake are equally showstoppers. “We cleared up the trees by cutting some down to open up the area and improve the airflow”. According to Song Qixing, any tree, whether newly planted or old is always a sight to behold when properly maintained.
Iconic “Lone Tree” is Healthier after “Makeover”
The “Lone Tree” in the East Lake Scenic Village is a nostalgic memory for many in Wuhan.
It is a camphor tree positioned in middle of a traffic roundabout which eventually became a landmark attraction of the East Lake Greenway.
Recently, during a visiting to the park, a reporter from Jimu News discovered traces of pruning on its branches.
It turns out that in an effort to encourage growth, the Wuhan Municipal Garden Greening Construction Management Station instructed relevant units to “give it a haircut”. “Prune the dead branches and inner branches to thin out the foliage”. Song Qixing added that the “Lone Tree” appears far more aesthetically appealing and healthy following the “makeover”.
Undoubtedly, a tree’s roots are essential to its healthy growth.
Despite the tree pit of this camphor tree being rather small, no expansions can be made due to limited surrounding space. The management team decided to slightly reduce the thickness of the soil in the tree pit. “I go to Shuxiang Road every week to inspect the “Lone Tree” and it is growing well after pruning and tidying it up”. Song Qixing added that measures to foster the tree’s growth are underway.
Changing the Soil of Each Oriental Sycamore for Improved Growth
Shuxiang Road is lined with over 400 oriental sycamore trees, most of which are over 5 decades old, and an integral part of the surrounding ecosystem.
“The trees have been affected to some extent by the construction of greenway”. Song Qixing explained that to bolster healthier growth, soil within a 1.5-meter radius of each tree was replaced with a 30-centimeter layer of fresh compost.
Zhou Ying told the reporter that daily inspections of the trees along the East Lake Greenway are conducted to monitor growth, and address issues as soon as they arise. They also bump up watering to combat the sweltering summers. In an effort to avoid interfering with traffic, the staff drive mini golf carts to water the trees in the early hours.
After repeated inspections, a few oriental sycamore trees were found with yellow leaves and premature leaf fall. They team took various approaches to aid in the trees’ recovery, including drilling holes into the tree pit to help with water drainage and aeration, hanging nutritional drips on the trunks as a nutrient supplement, and pruning the foliage to reduce water and nutrient consumption.
At present, the trees are showing signs of recovery, as the management staff continues to monitor them closely.
In a bid to enhance Shuxiang Road’s aesthetic appeal, the staff pruned some trees while also preserving their natural charm. “The leaves have to be thinned out, but we still ensure the trees can continue to provide shade”, said Song Qixing.
“Our experience maintaining the large trees along Shuxiang Road can serve as a reference for the construction of gardens and green spaces in Wuhan”. Du Yanhua explained that protecting every tree, flower and plant should always come first.
